Physical therapy aims to relieve pain, restore
movement and function and prevent future injury and dysfunction. Physical therapy is directed at helping people and educating individuals to help themselves by teaching them about their bodies, their disorders and their health. Physical therapy is for the young and old alike; for the sedentary, the weekend warriors and the competitive athlete. Physical therapy addresses musculoskeletal disorders ranging from neck strain, low back pain, knee injuries, shoulder injuries to repetitive use syndromes.
The physical therapist will perform an evaluation
assessing muscle strength, flexibility, joint motion,
sensory evaluation neurological tests, coordination and balance, posture and movement analysis to determine the underlying cause of your condition. A treatment plan will then be designed to rehabilitate the injury or dysfunction. The treatment plan can include: patient education to teach the individual about their dysfunction, how to deal with the current problem and how to prevent the problem from recurring, "hands on" techniques addressing joint restrictions, soft tissue restrictions, postural education and movement retraining to increase body awareness, therapeutic exercises to restore flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, functional retraining for work or sport related activities and modalities to decrease pain. The overall goal of physical therapy is to help individuals lead more healthy, active and independent lives.
