Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a system of massage therapy that has been developed as a specialized way to perform manual therapy.  This technique is generally used for injury rehabilitation work, and is usually applied by a therapist working on a focused area.  NMT practitioners are educated in the physiology of the body and its effect on muscular and skeletal systems.  They also will have an understanding of how the neuromuscular system functions, and the various causes of pain, which are sometimes divided into these categories:

1.      Ischemia: Which is the lack of blood supply to soft tissue,

2.      Trigger Points: Which are irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body, and are often caused by repetitive motion activities,

3.      Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone, which can be caused by hypertonic muscles,

4.      Postural Distortion: Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from improper movement of the body due to faulty patterns.

The neuromuscular therapist achieves their goals by the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain.  As mentioned earlier, this involves manipulation of the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system.

As noted, it takes special training to perform this type of treatments, and The WIN Health Institute actively recruits and engages NMT therapists to provide this injury treatment modality.
